The Legend That Is Big Papi
There are no words to describe how important David Ortiz is to the Red Sox. It is genuinely getting to the point where he should simply be walked regardless of the situation when he comes to bat in a game winning situation—two runners on; three runners on; no runners on—-walk him. It’s safer. He is the new, unpretentious Reggie Jackson.
As for all the dogmatic and self-important baseball writers who insist that a player who is predominately a DH and rarely plays the field should be excluded from MVP consideration—-if they continue to deny David Ortiz his just due based on some unilaterally imposed criteria of their own devising, they should simply have their credentials taken away. If there was ever any doubt, it should no longer be a question as to who the Most Valuable Player in the league is. It is David Ortiz.
THAT IS RIGHT!!PAPI IS THE MAN!

The problem is that a guy wearing No. 24 is behind him…which Giants opponents didn’t have to deal with in the case of Bonds. Kruk had the best solution tonight: Walk Papi. Then walk Manny. Even if it brings in a run.

hE HAS BEEN THE mvp FOR THE LAST TWO SEASONS RUNNING AND IF YOU GIVE ME A MOMENT i CAN MAKE AN ARGUEMENT WHY HE HAS BEEN THE mvp FOR NOW THE THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN PAPI RETIRES SHORT OF THE REDSOX CRITERIA FOR RETIRING NUMBERS? MY BET IS THAT SOMETHING WIL NEED TO BE DONE AND IN A HURRY, REVAMP THE CRITERIA NOW!!! HE SHOULD BE MVP 2 YEARS RUNNING NOW AND REGARDLESS OF WHERE HE FINISHES NUMBERS WISE, HE COULD RETIRE TODAY AND HIS NUMBER SHOULD GO UP RIGHT BEHIND NUMBER 14.
Manny, while a wrecking machine in his own right, doesn’t have the history of late inning clutch hitting that Ortiz does. (I don’t remember anyone being as consistent as Ortiz, for that matter.) Sometimes you have to pick your poison. I’d take my chances with Manny.
Ortiz can be shut down, pitchers are scared of him, how can he be so clutch but when a lefty with a decent breaking ball comes him, he looks like the pitcher is throwing voodoo at him. I remember watching him take some swings against lefties that were very horrible, but I guess those were not clutch at bats so he didn’t care…
